It's possible that the previous owner disassembled the gauge cluster and removed the LEDs for the SES light and ABS light. That's a lot more effort than replacing a faulty evap canister, but maybe it was done for other reasons. I know a guy who knows a guy who was running catless and did this so he wouldn't have to see the SES light.
