At this price point BMW could afford to add whatever transmission option they thought was best and they did. That said, there is no way that an automatic transmission will be as quick downshifting as a DCT - just look at the mechanical workings of the transmissions. This topic has been often debated with respect to this car and I believe that the consensus was that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages for the ways in which actual customers will use this car.
