I disagree with you. It is often overshadowed by the 991 Carrera S and is an excellent driving car in it's own right.

(Notice how the 7:50 time is roughly halfway in between the 8:02 time of the $84k model and the 7:37 time of the $98K model)???

For what it's worth,
Dag Johnsen posted a lap time of 7.44 in his 991 Carrera PDK.
The 'base' 991 is no slouch.

The base 991 is absolutely no slouch. The lap times are impressive, especially given its power output. Perhaps more importantly, lap times aren't everything--especially for those of us who won't be racing on the Nordschleife any time soon.
Just a heads up though: I do a fair amount of reading on the Rennlist forums, and Dag's 7:44 in the base 991 was a BTG time. He even states himself that his comparable "Sport Auto lap" time is roughly 8:02.5 and his comparable full lap is roughly 8:07.7 by his estimation.
