bmw's are no special as far as how the engine is cooled with coolant. When you introduce air in the system. The coolant does not actually flow well. Part of the engine gets very hot and some parts are cooler because coolant is not circulating everywhere how it should. This is a VERY bad scenario and cylinder heads can be ruined quick this way. When you have no hot air shut engine immediately. Generally bleeding and tapping coolant lines is enough to clear air.

Car should not be started after any coolant refill before doing bleeding twice at least.
