Not sure I agree, but completely understand your point.
I think the Comp, with subtle styling changes is still a sleeper.
Then add aggressive diffuser, spoiler etc and it changes.
I'm 50, have stock M5 and have de-chromed and added an OEM rear lip spoiler and diffuser, but still don't feel I'm punching like a 20 year old.
