The coding is via the OBD port. The cable has an RJ45 jack on the other end (in E series it was USB) this then creates a network connection to your car. VMware Fusion can be used on the Mac. I keep a Windows laptop for coding and a few specific apps that are a lot better if run natively on a PC.
My first coding was for safety reasons (ability to receive all FM frequencies in EU tunnels), since then it has been for the fun of having the car do a few things that the techs at my local BMW shop dreamt of but do not know how to do (or are not allowed to).
