Slotted rotors do have a purpose. I guess for some applications (reduction of mass for motorcycles), drilled rotors have some functionality as well (along with allowing trapped gasses to escape), but for cars I am also of the impression that it mostly cosmetic.

Race cars use slotted rotors - the slots clean the pads and allow the trapped gasses to escape.
