Here is a picture of the “rocky port” from which the SS Minnow departed on its three hour tour. This is Newport Harbor, Newport Beach, CA. Approx 60 miles to Santa Catalina Island, seen on the horizon. The weather having started getting rough, and the tiny ship tossed, it likely blew beyond engine range and then crashed ashore that desert island.
Pic taken from my mom’s house. That harbor also was used for The Boatniks and the area around for several other movies (Herbie the Love Bug, Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World).
