Something else to keep in mind is the grandparents.

You'd be surprised how useful it is to have a 3rd Row so all 6 of you can climb in and take a lazy summer drive to get ice cream, or not have to take 2 cars to the crowded grade school parking lot for the dance recital. Your kids will have friends and playdates, very much comes in handy carpooling too. X7 is a terrific minivan replacement, though uncool to discuss publicly.

While on the subject, for overnight trips you'll need a cargo box on the roof for any BMW SUV you wind up buying so long as you're in the car seat and stroller phase. Doesn't matter if it's X5 or X7.

Point is, the best thing about the X7 is the 2 extra seats that just pop up out of nowhere when you need them most, and they are very comfortable and downright spacious for kids and adults too. Our grandparents rave about them. Decide between the X5 and X7 based on the 2 extra rear seats, not the interior cargo area.
