I found out that the cigarette lighter does shut off after a few minutes so I am good with my current setup.

At first I thought oh no the cigarette lighter is not switched, this is going to be a problem for the radar detector. Locked the car, still on.
So I came back a little later and it had switched off. Delayed shut off is odd.
