617 came from people beginning to use bhp instead of hp (metric horsepower) on the forum after they have been quoting the 600 metric horsepower figure on the "base" M5 since day dot.
If we are going to quote the car in bhp the "base" M5 would be 591bhp and the Competition 617hp. Equating to a 26bhp power upgrade over the "base" M5.
•M5 =441kW =591bhp
Or 600hp (metric horsepower)
•M5 Competition =460kW =617bhp
Or 625hp (metric horsepower)
