I bet that cost is part of the reason. To backlight a movable control requires optic fibre, hollow components and using translucent white plastic inserts. Compare this to how what they are doing currently for the vent wheels (solid black plastic with white paint).

Audi do a really nice job on their vent controls which are all backlit at night with small triangles along the edge of the wheels which increase slightly in size to indicate which way you turn the wheels to increase airflow them more. But Audi's attention to even the small details and their high-tech look is excellent and slightly ahead of the competitors. I don't buy into the argument that you wouldn't need to see them at night as your wouldn't need to adjust the airflow as I do this occasionally in my current car.

Having said that, this is a nitpick and I still think the detail and elegance of the E90 interior is very impressive.

Well spotted though!!!
