magnaflow muffler

How are you guys doing. I just bought a used magnaflow muffler for 1 series but I noticed when I turn the muffler and hold it I hear a lot of debris in the muffler. It sort of sounds like sand. Does anyone know why is that? Thank you

Magnaflow's have a straight through perforated pipe that's wrapped in stainless steel mesh and surrounded by an acoustical material. I'm not sure what the acoustical material is but it sounds like it is breaking down inside the muffler. This won't hurt anything or block flow but it will get louder as that material continues to degrade.

I think that looks like pieces of the perforated pipe that the exhaust flows through. I didn't realize debris was falling out of the muffler. I'm sorry to say it but that muffler is toast, I wouldn't use it. Here's a cutaway of typical Magnaflow construction. You can see the perforated pipe running down the center and it matches the rusty bits in your picture.

With the perforated core essentially rotting away it's going to allow the stainless mesh and acoustical fiber to come loose inside the muffler. If you're lucky it will happen slowly, blow it out the tips and just get really loud. If it blocks the tips instead then it will be more restrictive than it was originally. It's not hard to swap out so you can give it a try and see how it works.

Thanks man I understand now. I’m going to put it on and see how it is, if I see it is really loud or I am loosing any performance I will just look for another muffler than. I hope it doesn’t block the tips, wouldn’t that cause engine damage?
