The AMG sounds absolutely intoxicating, especially on those downshifts.

I wonder how the M5 will sound with the M Perf Exhaust.

I might be in the minority here, but I don't really like the sound of the AMG V8. Louder is not always the better experience.

The E63S is offered as a wagon, to me that's something I wish we have as an option with the M5.

Yeah, Steve can't drive.

I did proclaimed while the acceleration test's results might vary, the M5 should win every track test, guess I have to take that back......

This appears to be the same track on which they test all cars.

Both Steve S.'s professed love of the M5 (well deserved no doubt) and the video support a conclusion that he was driving the M5 significantly harder than the E63s. So in the particular test, I expect that there might have been more than 0.1 sec of difference if the E63s had been driven harder.

As many, many tests have now shown, the cars are so close that which car "wins" in a performance test will depend on many factors, including the day, conditions, drivers, nature of test, etc. Realistically, the choice may just be personal preference. The M5 does appear to have an edge for most comfy on "comfort" setting.

The M5 Competition Pkg (surely to be priced stiffly in the US) should help give the M5 an edge.

.1 seconds even with a pro driver and used to the cars can be a variance lap to lap. With a journalist that hops in the car and does a lap, I can't count this as proof the AMG is faster. Besides which tires was each on? Switching from Michelin to Conti's could vary .1 secs.

Close enough. Can't believe they are this close to each other. We're going to see them flip flop in both straight line and on track.

Performance wise they are basically the same car. Strangely enough between the 2 the following things are more reasonable factors to sway a purchase decision vs worrying about the performance (which I think is hilarious at this level btw):

- exterior design
- exhaust note
- Interior design
- included technology
- stereo system
- desire to have a big sunroof
- comfort vs stiff feeling of suspension
- brand loyalty
- whether its monday or tuesday
- which blue color you like the most
- interior scent
- which one you think the opposite sex is more attracted to
- which one you think makes you less of a d-bag

Auto express has tested the E63s on this track against the panamera and got exactly the same time. Steve is a talented driver - to say he drove the E slowly because he likes the M5 more is ridiculous. They would have done a bunch of laps to work out the quickest way around for each car.

Lol. I agree. I may switch to E63 after few years just to have something different.

The only real sound comparison is the 2 second exterior sound blip at the start of the video. All the inside the car stuff is fake. The 2 second blip does have the AMG sounding slightly "better" than the M5 (and the M5 has the optional MSport exhaust that we can not get in the US without the 1/400 edition). The Akrapovic on my X5M kills both of them. I hope Akra is ready for my M5 soon....

Look at the video... .

Have you ever been on track? I have with many sportscars and motorcycles.

Bottom line is that these cars are as close as it can get, so the choices become more subjective as noted by other posters.

Yes many, many times - my M5 is my daily but I always have a more serious toy that I take to the track 3-4 times a year, currently an 812 superfast. As someone that has seen alot of timed laps, I know looks can be deceptive and that aggressive is often slow and smooth is often fast. If you can tell he's sandbagging from the footage you're better than me.

From the actual recorded data I have seen from motor trend and sport auto the M5 brakes better, accelerates faster and had a quicker figure 8 and slalom. It was also 0.7sec quicker at Hockenheim.

The E63's won this battle, but to suggest they held it back to make it closer doesn't ring true.

Each to their own--opinions, cars, etc. Agreed that I am not clairvoyant as to the effort of SS behind the wheel of each car. I look at this test as a toss-up just like many of the other tests--not a resounding victory for either car.

I have had 5 previous BMWs and will vote with my wallet and purchase either the M5 or an E63s. I have a M5 test drive scheduled Friday.

Maybe you can fly your 812 SF over to Southern California and we can share some friendly track time at autoclub speedway in Fontana? I will bring my humble '14 Viper. You can show me the smooth and fast lines!

We are very fortunate to have many excellent car choices now--let's hope this lasts for some time!

Ha ha - I am probably on the aggressive side, so I will probably show you not how to do things. Sideways is just so much more fun!

I honestly don't think you can make a wrong decision - both epic machines that are so closely matched. Dealer gave me a E63s for a weekend and thought it was a hoot - although all round I think the M5 is better suited to my needs.

There was a "smash M cars around the track" last week at the Sochi F1 circuit for loyal BMW fans/customers/tuners. Surprisingly, the feedback on social media was pretty meh - mainly the breaks were sh*t; can feel the weight on turns due to softer suspension; the engine needed revving to feel punch. The M2 was praised.

You gotta be jokin' quoting unknown fellas ... what do you think of Christian Gebhardt's driving? http://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1485738

The M2 is more of a track car than the M5 - drive them back to back and the M5 will feel heavy...because guess what, it is heavy.

Unfortunately the E63s is even heavier, just like panamera and RS6/7. I've driven them all and if you ask me the M5 feels the lightest and most nimble. The tests seem to confirm my impression in that it is the lightest, it's superior in all the slalom, figure 8 and braking tests. In fact even most track tests and acceleration tests have also been won by the M5.

The E63s is awesome car and I would happily own one - but the M5 is not sh*t.

That would do it, and probably more than .1 sec improvement if the M5 had the PS4S. I noticed a huge improvement (2 seconds a lap at VIR) with my M5.
