"The simple fact that we're talking about a stock sedan in the 2.x territory, and 10 second territory for the quarter mile is crazy."

exactly... the Tesla launch mode is just to impress friends. It's not for long bouts of spirited driving. Bragging rights, I suppose.

I have a 335xi 2015 with m power kit II, approx 330 / 335 hp
1/4 miles in 13.29 (5 run) best time
Probably the same for a stock 340xi.

I hit it hard for the first time out of a toll booth yesterday and I thought I was going to launch into orbit.

Really though journalism doesn't mean shit. All new cars get rave reviews. Reviewers go from car to car so their reference point is only modern vehicles. Personally I have totally lost sight of who these cars are for and if you really compare the M of old, there has been a huge departure. Don't trust the journalists. Just go for a long drive. And while it's a rocket, try not to let it influence your purchase as you will always 100% of the time get used to and bored of horsepower.

I am glad BMW has re asserted it's position in the "wtf it's a sedan??" realm. But does it have character?
So so true. Current car "journalists" are anything but. Ever wonder why nearly every review for a given car are so similar between the various different news outlets?

It's because the vast majority are simply repeating what the manufacturer has spin fed them. Combine this with a lack of experience (and a lack of confidence that seems innate to a young writer) and most of what they are writing is what the manufacturer wants them to say, and totally detached from reality.

If you don't believe this, just pick any car you want then read the reviews from the major publications and look for the similarities in what they are saying. The unwitting reading may see it as confirmation of some trait of the car, but in actuality it's simply a line which was consciously or subconsciously put out by the manufacturer and then repeated by the writer.

The most egregious I saw was with the release of the amg gt, where at press launch the media specialists put out there that the center console of the gt was designed to mirror the v8 engine, with two opposing banks of 4 buttons. Well goddamn if every single review didn't go off telling us about this as if the individual journalist noticed this on their own.

Always be smart and always use your own judgement. There was a time when journalists brought smarts and experience to the table (road and track comes to mind) to give insightful and trustworthy reviews. More recently the only reviews worth anything come from Chris Harris and Clarkson, but they are entertainers so you have to mentally wade through the made for tv stuff to try to get at the real meaning of what they are saying. When you do get there, they are usually spot on.

C/d has usually been nonsense and that continues here. But this type of stuff is meant for internet "bench racers". Wow it can do 0-60 in 1 second. Great.

The more I read about the new M5, the more I want one. Can't wait to see how the Competition version stacks up.

Waiting for a car to do 0-60 in 0.00 seconds... maybe then they would need to benchmark 0-100 mph so that we can have 5 or 6 seconds again.

Just like the 'numb steering' comment we keep hearing. Is it different since it went to Electric? Yes, but it's not that bad..

the f10 wasnt better to drive than the e60? sureeee lol what fucken jokesters
It wasn't as engaging of a chassis no . Faster and more fun are not one in the same .
only thing worse was steering feel it was faster and better in every way. this is the m3/4 comp pack vs original talk all over again. car comes out o its amazing. 2 years later comp pack comes out.... o the other car was shit never liked it so sloppy. these journalists are too cute.
Every way? Didn't sound half as good. Didn't rip to redline. Didn't have the engineering coolness of ten individual throttle bodies (or even one for that matter.). Didn't have a dry sump.

Didn't look like Dame Edna. Didn't have the hardest wheels evah to clean. Didn't have nearly as chintzy of an interior. Didn't have a torque black hole under 4k.

See, plenty of places it was lacking.

I hate all GTR owners in my town who think they are on the drag race at every light.
Nonetheless, awesome car, M5 it is.
Now you can show them how much you hate them by beating them to 100. At least a stock one. Here come the HAHA GTR plates?

I re-read the article. While the brake is pressed the rear wheels are ‘spinning’. Once the brake is released the car moves forward and the fronts hook up.

How does this work at the drag strip? Car and Driver obviously didn’t do this at a real strip. Must be fun at stop lights although kinda obvious when tires are smoking and it hasn’t turne green yet.

Good to see it returning to form. I hated the f10 m5 with a passion! It was powerful but boring imo. I’d rather drive the gsf, “underpowered” in today’s standards but more engaging and love the NA sound
